How to work under Xfce4 in Vafeo environment ?
The GUI proposed in most Vafeo distributions is Xfce4. This is a extremely effective and efficient graphical environment for desktop users.

The current version 4.4 embodies the traditional UNIX philosophy of modularity and reusability. It consists of separately packaged components, which together provide the full functionality of the desktop environment, but can be chosen from to create the user's preferred personal working environment. Xfce is mainly used for its ability to run a modern desktop environment on relatively modest hardware.
Xfce 4 gives a high priority to adherence to standards, particularly those defined by the freedesktop.org project.
It is based on the GTK+ 2.x toolkit (like GNOME). It uses the Xfwm window manager. Its configuration is entirely mouse-driven, and the configuration files are hidden from the casual user.
In VAFEO, Xfce4 environment is initialized with 2 pannels (top and bottom) plus a few icons on the desktop.
- The panel in the upper right:
From left to right you aves applets Deskbar (for multi-source), Wicd
(for configuration wifi), the audio volume, the printer configurator,
and Tracker (for searching files fast)
- The icons on the desktop:
- vd_xxxxx: is the CD format iso in the CD
- Trash: temporary storage before the final deletion of the elements
- Home: By clicking on the icon you open personnel storage with Thunar, the File Manager used in Vafeo.
- File System: Thunar launcher at the system level
- 3D desktop: this optional icon will be on the desktop if the graphics card has been recognized during the boot. To activate your 3D desktop, double-click on this icon. Attention, recognition of the cards is not yet perfect, if you encounter problems after 3D graphics activation , you can go back by double-clicking on this icon.
- Network Shares: use this icon to discover Windows machines and shares on the local network.
- Install the system on hard disk: Use this icon to run the graphical
installer vafeo2hd. The latter is a tool to help to graphically install the Vafeo system
on hard disk of the machine.
- Vafeo.org: to go on the site www.vafeo.org
- The panel on bottom, in the middle of the screen:
This panel aspect change following the distribution. In the example below, from right to left we have:
- Exit : stop the system
- Capture windows or display
- Liferea: Tool for RSS reader
- Pidgin: multi instant messaging protocols (MSN, YM, AOM, ...)
- Evolution: the manager of messaging, contacts, calendar and tasks
- Iceweasel, another name Firefox on Debian.
- The other icons are dependent on the distribution used. They are explained in detail in the chapter about the distribution.
